How is Success Measured

Sustainmyplanet measure progress against SMART objectives using the tried and tested ‘Burnt down’ graphs.

Burnt down graphs report progress by day, week, month or year from your baseline. The next few words explain how:

myBaseline

Before you can improve something you need to calculate your baseline. The baseline calculation will depend on the driver behind your improvement project, e.g. mhHouse, myProduct or myWaste. The baseline calculation will dictate the dimensions to measure the Burnt Down graph against.

myTarget

The second step is to calculate the target defined in the SMART objective. The dimension of the target must be the same as the dimension of the

myBurntDown Graph

The third step is to define the time frame in which you need to ‘burn down’ from the baseline to the target. The y-axis is defined in terms of the units of the baseline and target. The x-axis is defined in terms of time. So the burnt down line starts at time = 0 and ‘burns down’ until the number units equals to the target.

Finally we have a method that answers the basic questions like should I trade in my clapped out old guzzling Mercedes with a spanking new electric Tesla. Critically in this case the baseline calculation not only includes the all important cost of manufacturing a new Tesla, it also includes the total cost of ownership of the clapped out old Mercedes.

sustainmyplanet.com demonstrates how simple it is to expose the true progress an improvement project can deliver over time. This progress reporting technique is applied consistently across all sustainmyplanet services, including the macro improvement projects such as sustainmyocean and sustainmyair to micro improvement projects such as sustainmyhouse, sustainmyproduct, sustainmyfood and sustainmywaste. Each service explains exactly how the calculations are applied to ensure every thing is straightforward to follow and completely transparent.
